Exploration, Excitement, Experiences; they’re what the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about. And no, you don’t have to be “advanced” to take it – it’s designed so you can go straight into it after the PADI Open Water Diver course.

The Advanced Open Water Diver course helps you increase your confidence and build your SCUBA skills so you can become more comfortable in the water. This is a great way to get more dives under your belt while continuing to learn under the supervision of your PADI Instructor. This course builds on what you’ve learned and develops new capabilities by introducing you to new activities and new ways to have fun SCUBA diving.

The best part…the Advanced Open Water course is specialized to focus on the areas of diving you’re interested in learning more about, such as wreck diving or underwater photography.

** We will be updating and adapting some of the skills to stay within safe measures due to COVID-19.

  • Academics can be done online or through "good old-fashioned" books.  All academics are done as self-study, so you can do them on your own time at your own pace.
  • Confined Water is only necessary if you need a cold water diving orientation (the use of hood, gloves and a thicker wetsuit) OR if you are completing your course in a drysuit and you were not previously certified for its use.
  • Adventure Dives are completed typically over a weekend at West Hawk Lake (or on a Diver City Trip).  There are 5 adventure dives to complete your certfication and we can complete these dives locally from June through October each year.  There are 2 mandatory dives; deep and underwater navigation.  Then you have a choice of the 3 remaining dives, options include but are not limited to; drysuit, underwater naturalist, search & recovery, night, and peak performance buoyancy.

    *Each Adventure dive is the same as a dive from that specialty course. For instance, the Peak Performance Buoyancy Dive is the first of 2 dives from the full specialty course. You can get credit for these dives on your next specialty. You can also complete the Advanced Open Water Diver course by completing the 5 specialty courses!* Contact us for more information on these options.

  • To enroll in the PADI Advanced Open Water course or Junior Advanced Open Water course, you must be;

    • an Open Water certified diver (from any certifying agency)
    • 12 years or older (certain depth & buddy restrictions apply until age 15)
    • in good physical health (medical clearance may be required)

    Beyond using basic scuba equipment, you’ll need a compass and dive knife or dive tool. You’ll also use specialized gear depending on the Adventure Dives you choose. For example, you’d obviously use a dry suit for the Dry Suit Adventure Dive or a sidemount configuration during the Sidemount Adventure Dive. Your PADI Instructor will explain the equipment that you need and may suggest additional gear, such as dive light for night diving or lift bag for search and recovery diving.

    Equipment rental is not included in the price of the course, because we have found many students have started to purchase their own equipment.  However, we do have rental packages available for the weekend that include all necessary equipment.
